Today is World Refugee Day!

Refugee Day is a day to shed a light on the plight of refugees globally as their human rights are undermined on grounds on race, religion, nationality, belonging to a social group or due to political opinion.

According to 2018 UNHCR statistics, 70.9 million people are displaced from their homes with 25.9 million of those being refugees.

More than two thirds (67%) of all refugees come from five counties:

1. Syria Arab Republic (6.7 million)
2. Afghanistan (2.7 million)
3. South Sudan (2.3 million)
4. Myanmar (1.1 million)
5. Somalia (0.9 million)

Contrary to popular belief, the world’s top five refugee hosting counties are:

1. Turkey (3.7 million)
2. Pakistan (1.4 million)
3. Uganda (1.2 million)
4. Sudan – 1.1 million
5. Germany (1.1 million)

Some food for though as we reflect on the notion of safety, belonging and basic human rights.
