Our Impact

Supporting more equitable and inclusive educational environments through a human rights-based approach.

Diversity Focus is committed to meaningful impact through thoughtful practice, practical support and long-term institutional change. We work with schools and universities seeking to strengthen understanding, improve practice and better support the people in their communities.

Our work is grounded in a human rights-based approach, recognising that equity, inclusion, dignity, participation and belonging are central to creating educational environments where all people can learn, contribute and thrive.

Our Human Rights Approach

At Diversity Focus, our work is embedded in a human rights framework that values dignity, fairness, participation, accountability and non-discrimination. We support educational institutions to respond to issues of race, culture, exclusion and inequity in ways that are thoughtful, practical and grounded in respect for the rights and experiences of all people.

This approach shapes how we design our consulting, professional learning and eLearning. It also informs how we engage with clients, facilitate conversations and support institutional change.

How Our Work Contributes to the Sustainable Development Goals

Our work contributes to broader social impact by aligning with the values and aims of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly:

SDG 4 – Quality Education

We support schools and universities to create more inclusive, equitable and responsive educational environments where diverse learners and staff can participate and thrive.

SDG 5 – Gender Equality

Our work supports fairer and more inclusive institutional cultures that recognise the importance of equity and intersectionality in education.

SDG 10 – Reduced Inequalities

We help institutions identify barriers, strengthen responses to exclusion and build more equitable systems and practices.

SDG 16 – Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions

By supporting more accountable, inclusive and responsive educational institutions, our work contributes to stronger systems, fairer processes and more just outcomes.

Institutional Impact

We support educational institutions to build stronger racial literacy, improve inclusion and take more informed action. Through consulting, professional learning and eLearning, we help schools and universities strengthen practice and respond more effectively to the needs of their communities.

Our work aims to support:

  • Stronger institutional understanding
  • More culturally responsive practice
  • Improved staff capability
  • Better responses to racism and exclusion
  • More inclusive educational environments over time

Ethical Practice

Our work is grounded in care, respect, accountability and responsible engagement. We understand that conversations about race, culture and inequity can be complex and sensitive, and we approach this work with integrity, thoughtfulness and a commitment to doing no harm.

Education and Social Change

We believe that advancing racial equity in education contributes to broader social transformation and more just communities. Change within schools and universities has the power to influence lives, relationships, systems and future possibilities.

Long-Term Change

We aim to support changes that are thoughtful, sustainable and embedded over time. Rather than focusing only on one-off conversations, we support institutions to build stronger foundations for ongoing growth, reflection and accountability.

Case study: Supporting a primary school to move from apprehension to action

A primary school engaged Diversity Focus for a year-long program combining face-to-face workshops with eLearning to support ongoing staff development.

At the outset, there was a level of apprehension among staff. Some were concerned about saying the wrong thing, being judged, or not feeling equipped to engage in conversations about racism. Recognising this, the first session focused on establishing clear principles of engagement, creating a space that was both safe and accountable.

From there, the work centred on what mattered most to staff: student wellbeing.

We explored the impact of racial trauma on students, and the role of educators in recognising and responding to it. This grounded the conversation in everyday practice, shifting the focus from abstract concepts to real classroom impact.

A key part of the session was introducing the CARE Framework, providing staff with practical, accessible tools they could apply immediately.

By the second session, the shift was evident.

Staff reflected on how having clear, practical strategies increased their confidence to respond to incidents of racism, rather than avoid them. The conversation moved from uncertainty to application, from “what if I get it wrong?” to “this is how I can respond.”

The combination of ongoing engagement and practical tools enabled the school to move beyond awareness and begin embedding more consistent, informed responses to racism across the school environment.

Case study: Building racial literacy in a student wellbeing team

A university Student Wellbeing department partnered with Diversity Focus to strengthen staff capability in supporting students experiencing racism.

Given the student-facing nature of the team’s work, staffneededto have a shared level of racial literacy, both to understand student experiences and to respond in ways that were informed, appropriate, and supportive.

Rather than a one-off session, a series of workshops was designed to build a consistent baseline of understanding across the team.

Each session was tailored based on insights gathered through pre-engagement surveys, allowing the content to reflect the specific contexts, challenges, and learning needs of staff.

This approach ensured the training was not generic, but directly relevant to the situations staff encounter in their roles.

The Director highlighted the value of this tailored approach, noting that it allowed staff to engage more meaningfully and see clear connections between the content and their day-to-day practice.

Through this work, the department is strengthening its ability to respond to students with greater confidence, consistency, and care, laying the foundation for more informed and effective support.
