What are biases?

Bias refers to the inclination or prejudice that can lead individuals to favour or disfavour certain people, groups, or ideas based on preconceived notions, stereotypes, or personal beliefs.

These biases can be implicit (unconscious) or explicit (conscious) and may manifest in various forms, such as racial bias, gender bias, or confirmation bias. They can influence our perceptions, judgments, and decision-making, at times without our awareness.

Recognising and addressing bias is crucial for promoting diversity, equity and inclusion, as it can lead to unfair treatment and perpetuate inequalities. By fostering awareness and cultivating a more objective and equitable mindset, individuals and organisations can work to mitigate the negative impact of bias and make more inclusive and informed choices.
